Our brands

In 1999 Goodyear and Dunlop began a journey of discovery. The joint venture was to create something even greater than the sum of its parts. Goodyear Dunlop is dedicated to provide new technologies and innovations to make the driving world a safer place to be.

Bringing together prestigious brands under one roof has meant shared purpose and communication.

Here you will find information about each of our brands.

Goodyear

The Goodyear Story began over 100 years ago, when in 1898 industrialist Frank Seiberling purchased the company's first plant using money he borrowed from a brother-in-law. Seiberling named the company in honour of Charles Goodyear, who pioneered the discovery of vulcanisation.

Inspired by a statue in the home of Seiberling, the Roman God of Mercury embodied many of the characteristics for which Goodyear products were known. Seiberling determined in 1900 the distinctive wing-foot trademark, which remains a symbolic link with the company's past.

On the banks of the Little Cuyahoga River East Akron, Ohio, Goodyear production began with the production of bicycle and carriage tyres, horseshoe pads and poker chips. In its first month, sales amounted to $8,246. Since the production of the company's first bicycle tyre in 1898, The Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Company has become the world's largest tyre company.

The Goodyear brand today is recognised around the world, with its thousands of breakthroughs, innovations and new inventions. Goodyear led the way in the use of nylon, synthetic materials and more recently introduced the RunOnFlat tyre, bringing safety and peace of mind to a new generation of motorists. In the UK, Goodyear holds a leading position in all market sectors, and is working in conjunction with UK vehicle manufacturers such as MINI, GM and Land Rover in the development of new tyre technologies.

Although Goodyear has its own tyre retailing network in the UK in HiQ, Goodyear tyres are available from almost every tyre dealer in the country, proof of the brand's high regard in the trade and high acceptance amongst consumers.

Goodyear believes in proving its ability at the cutting edge. The result? More Formula One Grand Prix victories than any other tyre manufacturer and a road tyre range that developed from this success.

Dunlop

The Dunlop story begins with how a simple idea can change the world.

In 1888, John Boyd Dunlop invented the first pneumatic tyre and gained the inspiration from watching his son ride his tricycle. Dunlop noticed that his son experienced discomfort as he rode over cobbled ground. His son's tricycle had solid rubber tyres and this was to blame for his discomfort. Dunlop's solution was to wrap thin rubber sheets, glued together and inflated using a football pump creating a cushioning affect. This would then become the very first commercially viable pneumatic tyre.

John Boyd Dunlop recognised the tyres many advantages and patented the idea, fledging his Dunlop tyre company a head start over automotive competitors. Within ten years, Dunlop's invention almost entirely replaced solid tyres.

Dunlop has since become a successful multinational company, with operations in Germany, France, Canada, Australia, USA and production facilities throughout the globe.

In a defining step in the history of the Dunlop tyre business, the company was sold to (SRI) Sumitomo Rubber Industries in 1984. Goodyear later entered in 1999, into alliance with Sumitomo resulting in the formation of a new integrated company in the UK.

Throughout the history of motorsport and for past 100 years, Dunlop Tyres have played a vital role in its biggest successes. The Birmingham plant is home to Dunlop's global motorsport operation and ships its tyres to almost every major world-wide event. Riders in MotoGP, national superbikes and drivers in British Touring Cars and global sportscar racing are helping write the next chapter of the Dunlop legend.
